About Fred Lanting
Since he retired from the chemicals industry, Fred Lanting has had time to devote all his energies to his life-long avocation of dogs. He started breeding in 1945, although he had owned dogs for several years before that. In the 1960s, he became a professional handler (traveling to shows on weekends and vacations). After a dozen years of handling all breeds in two countries, he became an AKC judge, where he was active for many more years. Today he is an all-breed judge who limits his judging to foreign shows, and to UKC shows in the U.S. (the UKC is the second-largest registry in the Americas). Fred has judged in approximately 30 countries, and has many years’ experience as an SV Zuchtrichter (breed judge) as well. He has judged prestigious national and regional specialties as well as all-breed shows, including at the FCI Asian Shows in Japan and India.
He is the author of several books, most notably “Canine Hip Dysplasia” and “The Total German Shepherd Dog”. He is also a frequent columnist and contributor to magazines and educational websites. His illustrated lectures on orthopedic disorders, and on gait-and-structure analysis are very popular. He was a principal instructor at Senior Conformation Judges Association, and at West Virginia Canine College. He is a canine behaviorist and consultant, has helped many clubs with training techniques, and is listed as an “expert witness” for litigation matters. He has been a member of SV, United Schutzhund Clubs of America, and many other organizations. He has trained numerous dogs to Schutzhund, IPO, and obedience titles.
